FORT RODD HILL AND FISGARD LIGHTHOUSE: GATEWAY TO VICTORIA

Join us to hear Kate Humble, historian and Curator for Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites speak on this fascinating Victoria landmark. Now two National Historic Sites in one beautiful site, Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse have held the keys to Victoria’s maritime history since 1860. Starting with the trials and travails of the lighthouse keepers manning the first lighthouse on Canada’s Pacific Coast, to the creation of a high-tech military fort designed by the Royal Engineers, to the searchlights that illuminated the skies during WWII, to the green and leafy site run today by Parks Canada, this talk will unpack layers of history, examine the unique relationships between the Fort and notable local families like the Douglases and the Dunsmuirs, and even touch on some of the recent archaeological finds onsite.

Kate Humble’s career in history education and museums began with the University of Toronto and reached across the seas to the British National Collection of Arms and Armour. Here in Victoria, Kate has been the Education Curator for the Maritime Museum of BC, the Operations Manager for Craigdarroch Castle, and today still works with Discover the Past delivering historic walking tours of the city. Many VGS members will remember Kate speaking at one of our meetings in 2016 where she swept the crowd away with her masterful storytelling on the Dunsmuirs and Craigdarroch Castle. This talk is sure to be just as compelling so don’t miss it!
