Join us for a lecture based on a stunning new book of photographs and essays showcasing the wild beauty of the Coast Mountains— "Soul of Wilderness," written and photographed by mountaineers John Baldwin and Linda Bily.

As the authors point out in the introduction to the book, “in this modern world, where it is estimated that 75 percent of the earth’s ice-free land mass owes its appearance to humans, how many people have been somewhere they couldn’t see a road, a building or another person? How many people have ever truly experienced wilderness?” While the Coast Mountains are not the only example of wilderness left on the planet, Baldwin and Bily continually return to these magnificent areas of astonishing raw nature; complete with wild wolves, salmon and grizzly bears!

The book acts as a high impact field guide for the ultimate adventurer, bringing readers up close with this one of a kind Canadian region. The 166 full colour photographs included in the book were all taken during their mountaineering expeditions, which last anywhere from one to three weeks and often involved travel across difficult mountain terrain. Copies of the book will be available for purchase ($36.95, Harbour Publishing) and signing after the talk. John Baldwin grew up in Vancouver and became fascinated by the Coast Mountains that rise above the city.

Over the past 40 years he has completed numerous first ascents and pioneered many remote long ski traverses. He is the author of "Mountains of the Coast" and his award-winning photographs have appeared in numerous publications. Linda Bily is a passionate skier, photographer and environmental engineer who fell in love with the big coastal glaciers of BC, Yukon and Alaska. She has completed over 15 long mountaineering traverses by ski and her photographs have been published in a wide variety of magazines, catalogues and displays.
