Doors @ 6, Show @ 7

Tagged by guitarist Eric Clapton as one of the most advanced but under-appreciated guitarists in the world, the legendary Sonny Landreth plays Victoria’s Tallyho Sports Bar on Jan. 16.

The VBS is incredibly proud to be able to present such a talented and seasoned musician,” said society chair, Deb Rhymer.

Landreth, a frequent collaborator of Eric Clapton’s, has performed at all of Clapton's prestigious Crossroads Guitar Festivals as well as performed and recorded with such well-known musicians as John Hiatt, British bluesman John Mayall and Jimmy Buffett, among others.

This Louisiana bluesman has enjoyed a prolific, decades-long career dating back to his 1981 solo debut album Blues Attack, the first of 13 such efforts, including Bound By The Blues, released in June of this year.

Along the way Landreth developed a unique musical voice, expanding from blues, zydeco, folk, country and jazz into increasingly category-blurring musical excursions like Bound By The Blues.

I'm at a point in life where I want to make the most of every moment I can and that changes your perspective, your priorities and how you relate to everyone else. And at the end of the day, I think that's the essence of what I wanted to express with Bound By The Blues.”

Best known for playing slide guitar, he is respected for his unique technique of fretting notes and playing chords and chord fragments behind the slide. As well, he plays with the slide on his little finger, so his other fingers have more room to fret behind the slide.

Paul Black, whose band opens for Landreth, has been playing guitar and singing since the age of 18. A vocalist by default (he had to learn to sing when his singer unexpectedly walked off) he has been influenced by the styles of Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
