Summer Volunteer Events Details:
July 26th: Yellow Flag Iris Seed Pod Removal Event
This event involves collecting and bagging Yellow Flag Iris seed pods to help reduce the number of sprouts this invasive plant will produce next year. Yellow Flag Iris is particularly harmful to cattails and other plants which are used by many types of birds for nesting, and its removal will help improve the biodiversity of the area.
Date: July 26th, 2018
Time: 9 am - 12 pm
Place: Meet at the Open Air Classroom, 6043 Trans-Canada Highway
August 15th: Himalayan Blackberry Removal
In this event, volunteers will help remove Himalayan Blackberry around Somenos Creek. We hope to remove as much of this invasive plant as possible to make room for native species that improve the biodiversity of the area and create a more suited habitat for bird and fish species.
Date: August 15th, 2018
Time: 9 am - 12 pm
Place: Meet at the Somenos Creek Dog Park, 2355 Beverly St.
August 22nd: Open Air Classroom Cleanup
This event is a cleanup of the Open Air Classroom (OAC) to make the pathway more accessible to all visitors. This task is important because it betters the community experience of the Somenos Marsh, and encourages more people to visit the OAC and learn about the work the Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society does in the Valley. If time allows, volunteers will also be removing invasive plants to improve the biodiversity of the area.
Date: August 22nd, 2018
Time: 9 am - 12 pm
Place: Meet at the Open Air Classroom, 6043 Trans-Canada Highway
To all events, please wear long pants and sturdy shoes, and bring lots of water! Educational talks will be given by local experts at the breaks so participants can learn more about the Somenos Marsh Conservation Area. Gloves, tools, and training will be provided to all volunteers, and refreshments and snacks will be included!
These events are crucial to Somenos Marsh restoration — we could not do it without all our amazing volunteers! Everyone is welcome, and encouraged to invite others. The work that will be done this year is essential to the Somenos Marsh ecosystem, as the invasive plant removal will create better opportunities for native plants to grow, improve fish habitat for species such as the Chum and Coho salmon, and create better nesting grounds for bird species.
We hope to see you there!
