8:00 PM to 9:30 PM

Formed in 2017, the Sobremesa Saxophone Quartet is a multi-award winning ensemble that promotes conversation through music. The term “Sobremesa” directly translates to “over the table” in Spanish and refers to the time spent in conversation after a meal. From this, the group’s goal is to create meaningful musical experiences with which audiences can easily engage.

In both 2018 and 2019, Sobremesa was awarded first place in the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival for chamber music, and went on to receive first and second place at the Performing Arts BC Festival for the corresponding years. In Victoria, the quartet is fortunate to partake in various concert series, shared concerts with the UVic Orchestra, and had the distinct privilege of providing music for thousands at UVic’s Fall Convocation ceremonies.

The concert is titled “Mountain Roads” after American composer David Maslanka’s (1943-2017) 1997 piece. Blending newer-and older musical styles, “Mountain Roads” embarks on a sonic journey that is inspired by rugged mountain ranges and a spiritual form of beauty. Within the acoustically-sound Phillip T. Young Recital Hall , this concert will feature works by Piazzolla, Bach, Dvorak, and others, and will allow room for their saxophones to sing.
