Raising funds in support of the Where Do We Stand’s advocacy group for the long term health and sustainability of the Six Mountains and Community Forests.
Join Lila Music Centre’s Community Choir and share the joy of music in our annual fundraising concert, “Sing for Trees”, a fundraising concert on June 8th at Duncan United Church on Ingram Street. The concert will feature professional musicians, a children’s choir and our Community adult choir with a band to share the Joy, beauty and importance of the Forests, Mountains and the Trees surrounding our beautiful valley.
The Lila Community Choir has been singing together for 13 years in the Cowichan Valley and has offered over 35 performances. Choir director, Cari Burdett creates a fun and friendly atmosphere and welcomes and encourages all voices and levels to join in the joy of singing. She believes everyone can sing and is passionate about building community through music. Over the years, the choir has raised awareness and funds in the Cowichan Valley for many of the grassroot, non profit and community events that keep our community healthy, thriving and alive.

Every year the choir offers an annual community fundraising event. This year the Lila Community Choir is raising funds in support of the “Where Do We Stand” advocacy group for the long term health and sustainability of the Six Mountains and Community Forests. This group is a volunteer group of hard working dedicated individuals who believe in creating the broadest possible public consultation for the future of these 6 Community Forests, which include, economic, ecological and social values. Check out www.wheredowestand.ca for more information and watch a virtual tour of Stoney Hill, a video that was created to raise awareness about these treasured community forests.
The “SING FOR THE TREES” concert repertoire will have many songs in support the forests, mountains and trees. The choir will sing in wide range of genres including; gospel, world, folk and pop. Selections include ‘Sing for the Trees’ a modern folk ‘Trees Grow Strong’, by Lawrence Cole, ‘We Shall Be Known, a passionate positive folk ballad by Mamuse, a rainforest chant, ‘Ku di Ku Ku Ru’, a blessing for the trees from the Pygmy Rainforest. We are excited to have an enchanting children’s choir from the Nature Homeschooling Group bring their delightful energy to the choir this year.
Special guests this year will include soloist Sami, singing Xavier Rudd’s song, ‘Follow the Sun’ and our local vocalist, Hannah Elise will sing one of her new originals. Rising folk fiddle star, Quin Etheridge-Pedden, will bring his style, grace and authentic voice, adding harmonies and musical flair to the choir songs. We are thrilled to have local pianist, Tanya Gillespie join us once again to add grove, harmony with her virtuosic piano offerings.

Tanya Gillespie is a multi-talented phenomenon. With what seems to be an endless abundance of energy, personality and shear genius all rolled up into a 5 foot something package. With her Jamaican roots, she certainly takes full advantage of that country’s rhythmic and eclectic culture. Tanya invites you into her world of clever innuendos, word phrasing, rhythms, impish humour as well as heart breaking truths. Her EP “Roots” which I predict will go viral, is just the latest, of what I’m hoping is an endless supply of musical treasures this young lady has to offer.

Quin Etheridge-Pedden, a young emerging musician in British Columbia, portrays his music through 11 strings including a 5-string fiddle, guitar and his voice. Quin’s performances cause the audience to dance along to the high energy fiddle tunes, sing to the catchy songs, and stay intrigued throughout because of the cascading melodies pouring out of his loop pedal.

It is a gr K-9 program and the group singing with the choir is the gr K-2 group.
