Sheila Peters presents her novel A Taste of Ashes
at the Gabriola Library from 2 to 3pm:
Sheila will take you on a journey to meet three very different people. Isabel Lee's early life in rural BC was forever changed by a brief but powerful love affair with a young Guatemalan priest. Now a recovering alcoholic, she struggles to pull her tattered life together and repair the damage to her relationship with her estranged daughter. Once idealistic and hopeful, Father lvaro Ruiz has his own demons to confront. Tortured at the hands of the Guatemalan authorities and unable to escape the wounds of his past, lvaro returns to Canada seeking sanctuary. Neither he nor his daughter Janna know about each other. As their lives begin to overlap, each is all but overwhelmed.
After the reading, Sheila will touch on links between research, activism, and the creative process, and invite discussion about how her stories develop. From her first book, Canyon Creek: A Script - an exploration of the eviction of a Wet'suwet'en family from its home-site near Smithers - to her fourth, The Taste of Ashes, she explores the ways in which global issues can tear apart the lives of ordinary people. At the same time, she celebrates the resilience of the human spirit as it faces down cruelty, indifference and misunderstanding.
