Tuesday, January 14th, 2014
Lecture begins at 7 pm. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are a key strategy employed worldwide to maintain ecosystem services and protect biodiversity, yet two vexing questions remain: what is their social impact? And how ecologically effective are MPAs that are not fully closed (i.e., that allow some fishing)? The first question will take you to Indonesia, where the effect of MPAs on various aspects of poverty was followed over time. The second question synthesizes global information about the effectiveness of different kinds of MPAs.
