Sexualized Violence Prevention in a New Era
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
This professional development workshop will focus on sexualized violence prevention and response in an era of #MeToo and the so-called ‘fourth-wave’ of feminist and gender politics; this is an era in which there is renewed interest in the topic of sexualized violence, and where activism occurs largely via social media.
We will review the various waves of feminist politics that have brought us to a period in which sexualized violence is becoming more broadly defined. We consider the need to address sexualized violence through a focus on intersecting and oppressive attitudes and beliefs that go well beyond sexism and gender inequality.
We will further discuss the opportunities and challenges of working in the area of sexualized violence prevention and response at a time when there is renewed public awareness and interest and a seemingly endless stream of public disclosures.
We will end with a discussion of whether some of the primary prevention tools taught on university campuses – consent and bystander training –have application in the provision of front line social services.
