VIU Science and Technology Lecture Series: Canada's Exploration of the Universe

In this talk Dr. McConnachie will discuss how astronomy is ranked as an area of excellence in Canadian science. A major contributor to this success is Canadian expertise in the development of astronomical instrumentation using forefront technologies. This expertise has helped build and develop major international facilities including the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope, the twin Gemini telescopes, the James Clark Maxwell Telescope, and the Attacama Large Millimeter Array.
Presently there are several new large-scale projects underway including the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, called the James Webb Space Telescope, and the largest telescope ever to be built, the Thirty Meter Telescope.
Dr. McConnachie will outline how Canadians are at the heart of these international collaborations and will discuss some of the cutting edge discoveries that these projects can be expected to provide.
