A wine tour like few others.
Jean (Gérard Depardieu) wants his son Bruno to take over the family farm. And at this year’s Paris Agricultural Show, he plans to let him know. Bruno, who has been joyously slogging away out in the country year-round, has a different plan for the Paris Show – to get gloriously and rip-roaringly drunk on as many of the best regional wines as he can.
When it becomes clear to Jean that Bruno’s middle-aged inner man-child has gone “enfant terrible”, he decides to run with it as his last desperate ploy to get through to his son. Before you know it, they are on the road with an oddball cabbie named Mike, doing the regional tour for real. Tacky restaurants, terrible AirBnBs and lost souls of the highway are just a sampling of the true French fare that awaits them.
Saint Amour is a definite oddball, irreverent and spontaneous at every turn. Co-directors Benoît Delépine and Gustave Kervern’s improvisational feel is like a cross of David Lynch with Michael Winterbottom’s The Trip. A straight-scripted comedy like Sideways isn’t even a fair comparison but this is easily just as much fun.
