The Victoria Philharmonic Choir performs some of the finest baroque choral music. J.S. Bach's Cantata 198 (Trauerode), composed in 1727 for the funeral of Queen Christiane Eberhardine of Saxony beloved because she remained true to her faith, includes arias as lovely as any ever written. Music director Peter Butterfield comments about G.F.Handel's 'Dixit Dominus that it will have you shaking your head in disbelief in a good way. Only 22 years old when he wrote it, Handel proved he could beat the great Italian composers of the time at their own style.

The musicians: Peter Butterfield and his 50-voice choir bring together a cast of international soloists - Benjamin Butterfield, tenor; Anne Grimm and Nancy Washeim, sopranos, Sarah Fryer, mezzo soprano; and lyric baritone Dale Throness- along with young trebles from VancouverVoices Youth and the wonderful Victoria Chamber Orchestra with two viol de gambas, wooden flute and harpsichord. Listen to this delightful music in the warm, resonant acoustics of St. Andrew's Cathedral where the same choir performed Bach's monumental St. Matthew Passion a year ago.

The tickets: $25 general admission and free for accompanied children 12 & under. Victoria Philharmonic Choir concerts sell out. This is another performance you won't want to miss.

Get your tickets from Ivy's, Munro's, Cadboro Bay and Tanner's bookstores, Long & McQuade or from choir members.
