This event is part of Fernwood Sponsors Refugees' effort to unite our neighbourhood in welcoming a Syrian family to come live in the heart of Fernwood. Moved by the plight of Syrians forced to flee their homeland in search of a safe haven, Fernwood Sponsors Refugees is raising the $45,000 required to resettle a family for one year.

Rae Spoon

Rae Spoon has been called one of Canadas best songwriters and their new album Armour does not disappoint. The ten new songs hold all of the lyrical depth indicative of Spoons compositions while showcasing their distinctive voice. Armours self-produced enigmatic soundscapes blur the lines between organic and electronic instruments. Analogue synthesizers, electronic drum programming, drum kits, percussion, electric bass, cello and guitar carry the album through pop refrains and danceable beats. Armour, Spoons eighth solo album, is the highly anticipated follow-up to Polaris Prize nominated My Prairie Home, a musical about Spoons fraught childhood in Alberta. As much as My Prairie Home was about Spoons upbringing as a queer youth in a Pentecostal household, Armour is about their view of the future. Moments of reckoning with trauma and self-preservation mingle with messages of hope and survival. Armour explores the idea that there is no instruction manual for healthy adulthood, asserting that the attempt to construct meaning is itself the point of life. Armour is a tribute to the intimate space where both hope and despair have space to share the same voice.

Genvieve and the Wild Sundays

Soaring harmonies, catchy songs, original folk-roots music: this is Genevieve and the Wild Sundays. The all-female quartet features the award-winning songs of Vancouver-Island-based homesteading mama Genevieve Charbonneau. The music of the Wild Sundays is rooted in folk and old-time country, incorporating bluegrass rhythms, Americana, pop, and a whole lot more. Their eclectic experience brings a fusion flavour to a predominantly old-time sound, with a focus on three- and four-part harmonies.

Soul Shakers

Get ready to move. The Soul Shakers' brand of gritty, energetic R&B and soul includes contemporary tunes by Adele, Susan Tedeschi, and John Mayer as well as soul-sanctified classics by Tina Turner,Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, and many others. Fans love the Soul Shakers' ability to deliver red-hot dance music and interact with the audience in a good-humoured way.

Fernwood Sponsors Refugees is a collaboration between Fernwood Residents and the Casa Maria Emergency Housing Society in Fernwood, an urban neighbourhood in Victoria, BC. We have partnered with the Inter-cultural Association of Greater Victoria, which is a registered Sponsorship Agreement Holder with the Canadian government. ICA is authorized to work with community groups who are sponsoring refugees by facilitating refugees immigration to Canada and offering them support when they arrive.

ICA has long partnered with Casa Maria to provide a home for people in need and help them learn how to navigate life in Canada. Can't make the event, but still want to donate?
