'Snapshot of a Soul Place in the land of special needs', written and illustrated by Castlegar multi-media artist Kari Burk, is a mother and daughter's journey with Down Syndrome told in painting, drawing, photography, poetry and prose. With 40 original artworks and 60 photos, this 96-page hard-cover book tells the story of 25-year-old Mielle, granddaughter of editor Valerie Hennell and musician Rick Scott, who is Goodwill Ambassador for the Down Syndrome Research Foundation.

Author/illustrator Kari Burk says: "Perhaps the greatest obstacle faced by a person with special needs is being misunderstood and in turn, isolated, from life's processes and events. This book is my way of bridging that gap, celebrating the people, places and images that have shaped our lives and inspired my art."

In 1995, at age five, Mielle starred with Rick Scott in a video of the song Angels Do which she inspired. The video played 20 times a month for ten years on Treehouse TV and became an anthem for the special needs community. www.rickscott.ca/videos

Rick and Valley will read from the book to Rick's musical accompaniment, and talk about how and why the book came to be. This book and reading will appeal to anyone who has an alter-abled person in their lives. www.snapshotofasoulplace.com.
