Celebrate the joy of poetry with this years Gustafson Distinguished Poet, Jan Zwicky. The author of ten books, Jan has received a number of awards for her poetry including the Governor General's Award of 1999. Jan's lecture, entitled "Auden as Philosopher: How Poets Think," argues that poets know the world in a distinctive way that presents a profound challenge to corporate, technological culture.
The underpinnings of Jan Zwickys work are the earth itselfits beauty and reality; and music and philosophy. Were extraordinarily lucky to have her with us for the Gustafson, says Marilyn Bowering, poet, novelist, and instructor at VIU.
The Gustafson Lecture takes place Thursday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 in the auditorium of Bldg. 355 on the Nanaimo campus. A reception featuring a fine selection of wines and appetizers will follow the lecture. Everything is free of charge. The public is welcome to attend. If you're inviting your book club, remember to come early for group seating.
Funding is provided by the Ralph and Betty Gustafson Trust which is managed by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
Previous poets in the series have included: Dionne Brand, winner of the 1997 Governor Generals Award for Poetry, and Carol Ann Duffy, the 2009 Poet Laureate of Britain.
Jan Zwicky's books are available through the Nanaimo campus Bookstore. For more information, please contact [email protected] or visit the website: viu.ca/gustafson.
