Rachmaninoff All-Night Vigil (Vespers)
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
The work features shimmering, multi-part harmony, and some of the lowest notes you’ll ever hear from human voices. Though its first performance in March 1915 was a fundraiser for the Russian First World War relief effort, Rachmaninoff’s music is rooted in a tradition of Russian Orthodox chant that goes back a thousand years.
Also on the program are short motets by Anton Bruckner, and a work by the contemporary American composer Eric Whitacre that weaves the single word Alleluia into a complex tapestry of vocal colours.
