Time and decay have all but erased any remnants of the shops, buildings, and railyards of Alberni Pacific Logging Camp 1 from the landscape.
From 1937 until it closed in 1953, several hundred loggers and families lived and worked at this remote site past the end of Beaver Creek Road in the Alberni Valley. While the sights and sounds of steam locomotives, yarders, whistles, and camp life have long ago died away from this site, now reclaimed by nature, memories of Camp 1 live on through the paintings and spoken word reminiscences of Gabriola artist, Doug Harrison. Harrison was raised at Camp 1 until it closed. “I got to know a lot of the old timers and the old loggers that lived at Camp 1, and I heard their stories…this is a way of preserving some of that.”
Tonight’s speaker, Doug Harrison, spent his working life in several of the MacMillan-Bloedel logging divisions on Vancouver Island, later becoming a self-taught artist painting images of the working history of the BC Coast. This is Doug’s second presentation at the Nanaimo Historical Society. Last year Harrison presented the history of the Martin Mars water bombers at our general meeting in April. https://www.facebook.com/Nanaimo-Historical-Society-466384560135141/
