A 2013 graduate of Vancouver Island Universitys (VIU) Graphic Design program will install artwork commissioned by the City of Nanaimo outside the Port Theatre. Laura Timmermans responded to the Citys request for proposals for the art project, and was selected to create the original work.
Timmermans is currently working as a freelance graphic designer and likes to use her skills to inspire positive change. The message behind this sculpture is one of unity and connection.
Growing up in Ucluelet, Timmermans says she was deeply inspired by her natural surroundings and was strongly influenced by the First Nations culture and wisdom.
She says she was strongly influenced by the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations world view of Heshook-ish Tsawalk, which means 'all things are connected and interdependent'.
A public unveiling of the art will take place at 125 Front St., outside the Port Theatre at 5:30 pm, and will be followed by refreshments.
