A cornucopia of bands descends on Nanaimo for an evening of psychedelic rock at the Cambie Hotel Saturday. Groups from around Vancouver Island and beyond will offer a mind numbing array of styles.

Highlights of the week-end include Portland, Oregon’s Sun Angle, who’s latest single, “Drink the Moon” draws on inspiration from legendary kraut rock band Faust along with Arizona’s Meat Puppets. Victoria’s Ruby Karinto makes their Nanaimo debut. The group features Jason Flower long time underground guru and vinyl archivist. Flower has been a major influence on the Island’s underground scene through both playing and releasing records. His previous combo Mexican Power Authority is highly regarded around the world. The band has just been signed to Chicago based label Hozac for a 2017 album release. Tongues are still wagging from the last time Vancouver’s Psychic Alliance wowed the Hub City including playing Frank Zappa’s We're Only In It For The Money" album in its entirety. The most curious self description of a band comes from Victoria’s Golden Hand who describes themselves as a transcendental ritual spacegasm. They list Black Sabbath, Tangerine Dream and Sonic Youth as influences.

Nanaimo is also strongly represented by the likes of Flatbed, Anunnaki and Wide Eyed. Anunnaki have recorded a special CD release only available at the event and features members of Wolf Parade and Moths and Locusts. Their electronic guitar drenched sound recently wowed audiences in Victoria in a post Rifflandia event.

DS Lori makes a special appearance Saturday night. This Nanaimo combo features members of Bull Bucker, Flatbed and the Bash Brothers. All are long time Hub City mainstays. Many of bands playing will featured on the hotly anticipated and ballyhooed limited edition “Nuclear Free Nanaimo” compilation cassette which will be release Saturday night.
