TheatreOne’s Emerging Voices staged readings presents the second script in the series of three new plays by new playwrights - Leftovers by Nanaimo playwright and actor Brianna Wiens.

Leftovers starts with the notion that “you can’t choose your family, but you can ignore their phone calls!” In this time twisting comedy, siblings Sam and Sunny Sawyer (of the once famous folk group “The Sawyer Family Band”) connect the dots between past and present when they are forced to spend the weekend together. Laugh-till-you-snort-funny with dialogue that might sound a little too familiar, this new Canadian work is worth writing home about.

Artistic Associate Nicolle Nattrass comments, “This new play offers a unique, comedic look at what happens when two siblings come together to deal with ‘family matters’, not just any family matters but those of a famous family. This play bends time, past and present as brother and sister sift through the ‘leftovers’ of what remain.”

Brianna Wiens is an actor, producer, writer, and director based in Nanaimo. A graduate of the Bachelor of Performing Arts program at Capilano University, Brianna has spent the last decade working in theatre and film in Vancouver and in 2017 made the move back to the island. Brianna is a fast-rising star in Nanaimo’s theatre scene. She recently portrayed the teacher in Western Edge Theatre’s production of Between the Sheets by Jordi Mand. Other recent acting credits include Last Wife in Calling Home (SNAFU/Theatre Skam), Carly in Reasons to be Pretty (Western Edge), Narrator in Hipstory (Spec Theatre), Sam Sawyer in Leftovers (Dark Matter) and Female Actor in This is a Play (Ode Movements). An advocate for women’s voices in comedy, Brianna is co-producer and co-writer of the series Girls vs. The City, currently in its second season. You can watch the series on YouTube, as well as Season 2 on Telus Optik TV.
