Proportional representation group forming.
Does your vote count?
A public meeting to explore ideas and strategies to move the idea of proportional representation forward for the 2015 federal election.
Today, Canadas fundamental democracy is under threat! Due to our antiquated, unfair electoral system (first-past-the-post) we are being governed by ever growing hyper-partisanship, well entrenched ideological self-interest groups and failed economic and social policies.
In 2011 federal election, voter turnout was 61%. Our present government was elected with just 39% of votes cast representing just 24% of possible votes. The Conservatives won 54% of seats. Seen another way, under first-past-the-post 76% of Canadians had no influence whatsoever in creating this government.
The mid-island (Nanaimo) chapter of Council of Canadians and Fair Vote Canada are co-sponsoring this grass-roots, non-partisan coalition of citizens who have an interest in re-purposing and re-powering our democracy.
Everyone welcome! Bring your ideas, your enthusiasm, your patriotism and your respectful support of each other and Canada.
