Point of View, Free Writing Workshop
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
This workshop will help writers find the point of view that best suits a given work, and gives the characters room to be who they are. Often, when a piece one is writing just isn't working the way we want it to, it's the point of view that's getting in the way.
Point of view is the ‘inside-out’ part of storytelling and learning how to use it effectively is an important part of the writer's craft. As a writer, I strive to find the point of view that best suits my own style and at the same time gives the characters of the work room to be who they are. Along with style and character development, genre, age of intended readers, and the length of the work are also considerations for choosing a point—or points—of view for a particular piece. Following an overview of the various types of point of view, we'll discuss portions of published works and do some in-class exercises.
If time permits, participants may present a short section of one of their own works in progress for group discussion regarding the point of view they have chosen to use. Handouts will be provided for participants to take away.
Bio, Jocelyn Reekie I love books, and every facet of making them. In various incarnations in my writing life, I’ve been a copywriter for radio, journalist, storyteller, fiction writer (short stories and novels) and picture book writer and illustrator. My most recent published work is Destination, a story selected for McGraw-Hill Ryerson’s 2015-16 iLit series for grade 12 students across the country. Editing and publishing are additional facets of writing I enjoy. A graduate of the Banff Centre Book Editing Program in 1996, I have worked with others to establish two presses—Kingfisher Publishing in 1995; Peregrin Publishing in 2011—to produce three anthologies that, combined, contain the work of 66 writers and artists. Over two decades, I’ve given a variety of workshops for young and adult writers.
Sharing information about writing with other creators, whether they are beginners or well-established in their writing journeys, is a fountain of inspiration in my own work. I always learn something from participants.
