Poetry for the Earth with Denis Donnelly. Bring lunch, refreshments served.
Poetry has always reflected the evolving attitudes of societies towards the natural world. We will begin by considering the ancient Irish/Celtic world-view through the eyes and writings of John O’Donohue. Then, using examples from selected times and places including ancient Chinese, Anglo-Saxon, Medieval, the Renaissance, the English Romantics, and poetry from indigenous peoples, we will explore some of the currents in these traditions. We will also consider some beautiful and evocative contemporary poetry that explores our evolving societal relationship with the Earth. Resonating with the incisive and commanding voice of the poetic tradition, these poems speak to contemporary society’s re-awakening awareness of our intimate connection with the natural world. Also, as song and poetry have co-existed through the ages, I will from time to time lead us in songs (no singing experience required!) that will deepen our experience and enliven our understanding.
