Nanaimo, BC's Bethlehem Centre is offering a one day writing circle with celebrated poet and author Mary Ann Moore.

Enjoy the tranquil mountain and lakeside setting nestled in the woods on beautiful Vancouver Island. Writers explore new pathways and creative possibilities with Moore. This wonderful one-day event is part of a writing circle workshop series open to all writers from novice to professional. “Poetry can carry a burden,” poet Lorna Crozier has said. Whether you are new to poem writing or a seasoned pro, you will have an opportunity for replenishment and an honouring of your voice through the reading and writing of poetry.

Begin with a memory, a theme or a few words from a poem and make a discovery in the writing of your own. “Poems are maps to the place where you already are,” poet Jane Hirshfield wrote. There are many ways to tell your story; poem-making is one of them. A labyrinth walk, where everything is a metaphor, will offer calm, rebalance and insight.

Mary Ann Moore brings her passion for poetry and for writing as a spiritual practice to the circles she offers. As a poet, writer and circle leader, she has twenty years of experience writing in community and finds great delight in seeing people awaken their creative potential. As well as day-long circles at Bethlehem Centre and elsewhere, Mary Ann offers six-week women’s writing circles called Writing Life. Mary Ann’s poetry, fiction and personal essays have appeared in chapbooks, literary journals, websites, anthologies, on CD and in a full-length book of poems, Fishing for Mermaids (Leaf Press, 2014). She writes a blog at www.apoetsnanimo.ca and offers a mentoring program called Writing Home: A Whole Life Practice which you can learn more about on her website: www.maryannmoore.ca.

The goals of this four-session program are: To provide a safe place for people to tell their stories. To find the still centre of ourselves and of the circle. To write what has heart and meaning for us. To realize our role as leaders in a circle of leaders. To remember the divine feminine and embrace our female and male teachers. To become a community of peers slowing down to a natural rhythm.
