P.K. Page at 100 Immortality is not easy to come by, but if anyone is capable of it, it would be Victoria poet P.K. Page. She died in January 2010 at the age of ninety-three and she lives on through her prodigious writing and through the community of writers, artists and friends that she gathered around her during her lifetime. On Wednesday, November 23rd in the lecture theatre (A240) in the Human and Social Development building at the University of Victoria at 7:30 pm, a group of those writers and friends will gather to read from her works and to pay tribute to the life and work of P.K. Page on what would have been her one hundredth birthday.

Familiar literary figures such as professor emeritus Lorna Crozier, Patrick Lane, Eve Joseph, Patricia Young and others will read a selection of their favourite works by P.K. Page and will participate in a panel discussion on her life and work.

The event is sponsored by UVic’s literary magazine, The Malahat Review, and is organized by long time Malahat board member, Jay Ruzesky. “I still read P.K.’s work often and I think about her all the time,” Ruzesky says. “A word that comes to mind with P.K. is `presence’ and I think that though she died nearly seven years ago, she is still a presence in my life and in the lives of others.

That’s one of the reasons I think it makes sense to get together and honour her on what would have been her one hundredth birthday.” Page had a long history with the University of Victoria including a brief stint in the Writing department, and an honorary doctorate from UVic. She was a Companion of the Order of Canada and a member of the Order of British Columbia, and was awarded the B.C. Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence, as well as a Governor General’s Award. More information about P.K. Page is available on The Malahat Review’s P.K.
