Photography: Three Thematic Approaches

This intermediate level photography course focuses on the three themes used by the modernist photographer, Paul Strand. These include: portraiture, street photography and abstraction. Students are expected to have an understanding of the basics of photography including: exposure, depth of field and basic postproduction skills. These techniques will be further developed based on historic and current photographic art practices surrounding the three genres that were the focus of many 20th century photographers. Students can expect critical discussions, along with slide presentations and critiques to support and encourage their personal development. Note: A DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera and access to a computer for post-processing are required to complete assignments. Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Photography or knowledge of how to use a camera and postproduction skills
