Thursday, January 24th, 2019
7:00 PM to 11:00 PM

On Thursday, January 24th, Victoria's poetry slam champion and local spoken word artist, Pam Stewart, releases her debut book of essays, “I Really Thought It Would Be Easier Than This,” at the Copper Owl. She will be performing a brand-new set of spoken word for the occasion, and the evening will feature individual sets from local musicians Cluny MacPherson and Fraea The Banshee. To close the evening, DJ Nova Jade will be playing a set for the dancers in the audience.

“I Really Thought It Would Be Easier Than This” is a compilation of essays Pam has written over the past four years. They cover topics such as body image, the Me Too movement, the year she lived in her car, finding her spirituality, and of course, love.

Pam has been performing spoken word since 2012, and in 2018, she became the poetry slam champion of Victoria going on the represent the city at the national festival, The Canadian Individual Poetry Slam, in Vancouver. Gradually, over the past two years, she has been stepping away from the stage in order to focus more on writing essays on growth and personal development which have been regularly published by the mindfulness magazine, Elephant Journal. On January 24th, her two mediums will be bridged in a evening launching her book and releasing her new spoken word show.

For the past three years, Pam has become known for her spoken word performances at local burlesque shows, specifically with the Riot Grrrls Burlesque Review as their Poet in Residence. The spoken word Pam will be performing on January 24th will be a brand-new set of poetry called, ‘The I Am/We Are Comedy Tour.’ The title is tongue and cheek, as most of the spoken word Pam has been writing and performing for the past two years at the Riot Grrrls’ shows has been more humorous and light-hearted. This latest work is a more serious side of her poetry that audiences likely haven’t seen from her for quite some time. Her latest poems address the Me Too movement, being a woman in her early thirties, her relationship to space and her body, and of course, love.

The evening at the Copper Owl on January 24th will be warm, intimate, and incredibly worthwhile.
