Victoria native Paul Meier is having works displayed at Koffi at 1441 Haultain.

The works are oil on canvas.

I remember this trip because it was the first time I sat at the adult table for a meal with my grandmother present. At the time I imagined this to be my entry into adulthood. This event was unexpected but I tried not to act out of place. Looking back it seems like my presence there had more to do with Mr Leclair getting the flu and not showing up then some sort of ascension into the next phase of my life; his place at the table had already been set.

I spoke little during the meal while intently watching the adult behaviours for any social cues. My grandmother frequently dabbed at the edges of her mouth with her napkin during supper. From time to time I glanced at her mouth while she wasn't dabbing, looking for what she might be dabbing at.

Someone asked what was for dessert. My grandmother's indication that it was a surprise left me with the impression that we were having something highly favourable. It turned out to be some portion of the two litre's of rice pudding that she brought with her. She told the table she was noted for it back home. She leaned over and spoke softly into my ear. "I will let you in on a little family secret. Day old rice". Upon tasting it I realized this was a conservative estimate.

Though the rice pudding was disagreeable I asked for an extra serving. It seemed like the kind of thing Mr Leclair would have done.
