Learn more about MADZINGA
My name is Madzinga I was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. All my life I have been involved in the arts they have been my pathway, to directly engaged with others in the community, I began painting at the age of six, encouraged by my father who was a painter and recognized my talent.
My inspiration began when I was very young I used to watch my father draw and paint a lot so from watching my father I fell in love with colour. One day my father was not in his studio I had an opportunity to paint a painting, but I couldn’t paint how my father painted, as I didn’t know much about painting, so I moved to the wall and I really messed up the walls I painted a very big abstract painting on the walls which got me in trouble with my father.
When I had finished painting, my father discovered it and was very angry with me. I asked forgiveness and I was forgiven. So,” this how it all begin for me. As soon as I could draw better and paint I was introduced to the National Art Gallery in Bulawayo where I had an intimate relationship between interpreting art and making art and here is where I developed my appreciation for fine art.
The National Art Gallery in Bulawayo’s collection offered hundreds of ideas made manifest through material means. If people where to have a meaningful encounter with these works, we needed to know how to look at and interpret them to engage with these ideas.
So, from this program at the gallery I was trained to think visually and to understand how to interperate a work of art and how colour can make life and living enjoyable, make people happy and how to use colour to share stories of my culture.
I was enrolled at the National Art Gallery in Bulawayo program until I finished high school and then when I finished high school I enrolled at the Mzilikazi Art and Craft Centre I got more educated the by the next generation of thinkers with quality arts education, like identifying, understanding colour and the knowledge in the arts education and advancing philanthropy and that art media as its primary mode of communication. Since 2002 I have exhibited in Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa, The Netherlands, UK, Dubai, Canada, USA, and Australia.
My paintings are about life and living, enjoying making people happy and sharing my culture.
