Our People Will Be Healed, Our People Will be Heard: A Fundraising Film Event

This event takes place on Saturday, March 17, 2018, from 1pm-4pm at VIU Duncan Campus (Building 700, Room 140). It aims to raise awareness and generate discussion on strategies for indigenizing education. Admission is by donation and proceeds will be given to Red Will Womyn's Family Society, a grassroots non-profit agency supporting Aboriginal womyn and their families.

One documentary film will be featured with a selection of four short films made by BC indigenous youth.

The feature film, Our People Will Be Healed, by Alanis Obomsawin, focuses on Norway House Cree Nation, in Manitoba, and the community-driven actions taken to decolonize educational systems and to restore indigenous cultural practice, particularly for youth.

The short films include works be youth in grades 6, 7, 9 and 12. The topics cover issues ranging from family loss, mentorship, homelessness, and indigenous language revitalization.

Guest speakers and film respondents will include Elder Florence James, Lexis Linklater, the new VIUFA Chair for the Decolonization, Reconciliation, and Indigenization Committee, and Educator MaryDawn McWatt.

This event is presented by the VIUFA Status of Women Chair and Cowichan Valley International Women's Day Organizing Committee. FPSE - The Federation of Post Secondary Educators- has provided funding to support this Doxa Film Festival selection. This event is open to the public. Everyone one is welcome.
