Oceanside Grandmothers to Grandmothers presents Ordinary People Extraordinary Lives. Our guest speaker is Julia Cairns, artist, children's book illustrator and world traveler. Julia Cairns now lives in New Mexico and has traveled worldwide which inspired her to paint whatever is in her heart.

The experiences had with the people she met and the countries visited developed her style which is unique and whimsical. Her work is seen in hanging art work, children's books, fabric, and cards. Julia has lived in Africa and has taken much from her time there. Recently she visited India and one can see its effect on her art, still whimsical and family oriented.

The Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) supports community-based organizations that are turning the tide of HIV/AIDS in Africa. They provide care to women who are ill and struggling to survive; assist orphans and other AIDS-affected children; reach heroic grandmothers who almost single-handedly care for their orphan grandchildren; and sustain associations of people living with HIV and AIDS. The Foundation has funded over 300 projects in 15 countries.

The group in Oceanside was brought together by Carol Lundine and Kathy Grand in May 2006. Kathy and Carol have worked tirelessly for the last 8 years. There were about 45 women who came to the first meeting, many of them still involved to this day. Our aim was/is to raise funds in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmother to Grandmother Campaign. We raise funds from the sale of aprons, collection of bottles for recycling, make and sell angels, make and sell tote bags, hold dinners, teas, fashion shows and various other events.

To date, our group, now with more than 100 members, has raised almost $350,000 for the Grandmothers Campaign. We continue at every opportunity to act as advocates for this program.
