Operation Trackshoes supports people with developmental disabilities in a positive, integrated, sporting environment. The weekend event encourages integration thru participating and a chance to meet people from around the province that you would not normally have a chance to meet.
Volunteers:
Operation Trackshoes relies solely on the support of volunteers to assist the competitors on the weekend. No special skill set is required only the willingness to have fun and enjoy participating in this summer-camp style event. People can volunteer for as little as 4 hours or for the whole weekend. (If you volunteer for the weekend you are housed free of cost for the weekend meals included, other volunteers receive meals.)
We encourage individuals, teams, friends, family and anyone else who wishes to volunteer. As a volunteer, if you register early enough, you will have the opportunity to takes some training classes (such as first aid, sign language). Every volunteer must attend an orientation training session and submit to a criminal record check.
The number of competitors that can participate in Operation Trackshoes depends on how many people volunteer to assist them on the weekend. Each year there is a waiting list of competitors who would like to come, but due to the lack of volunteers are unable to.
Competitors:
The event is for people with a developmental disability between the ages of 6 and 80, regardless of their level of skills and abilities. The events include activities in Fun, Recreational and Competitive categories. Competitors come from all across the province to participate in the events of their choosing. (There is a cost to competitors to participate.)
As a competitor, you are encouraged to have fun and to enjoy the friendship of fellow competitors, counsellors and officials you will meet during your weekend at Operation Trackshoes.
Junior Program:
This program is for middle school aged children with and without developmental disabilities. The focus on this program is the buddy system where a child is teamed up with a child with a developmental disability to participate in the weekend events.
