Open Space presents "The Basement Panorama," artist Sandra Meigs's large-scale new work opening November 1, 2013, at Open Space. The showing runs from Friday, November 1, to Saturday, December 14, 2013.

Victoria visual artist Sandra Meigs recently went underground to study the invisible foundations of buildings: basements and crawl spaces. These overlooked, catch-all spaces are surprisingly intimate, a quality Meigs exploits in her large-scale new work opening November 1, 2013, at 7:30 pm at Open Space.

For centuries, the human body has been a frequently invoked simile for discussing architecture. Meigs takes well-used trope into the terrain of emotion and interiority, particularly the grieving process. Though her new drawings refer to buildings and infrastructure�things typically considered solid and factual, Meigs�s unsettling canvases achieve an uncanny physical presence and seem to shift and move as subtly as breath or the movement of the body�s circulatory system. Meigs observes that these new works cannot be read in a single glance; it is only by walking back and forth or finding a high and distant vantage point that they can be apprehended. To amplify this ambulatory and non-fixed pictorial position, Meigs plans to include a series of roving robotic figures in the space.

The new series, provisionally titled The Basement Panoramas, includes intensely hued drawings with imagery based on her fascination with the underbelly of domestic architecture. The works suggest parallels with interiority, particularly with the destabilizing self-reflection brought about through the grieving process.
