One Night Stand

In 1977, a new Canadian play opened in Toronto that changed everything. No longer were Canadian plays to be regarded as worthy but a bit dull – instead, they could be funny, sexy, and very, very scary. That play, which went on to one of the longest commercial runs in Canadian theatre history, was Carol Bolt’s “One Night Stand,” which opens Feb. 2nd in a co-production staged by Western Edge Theatre and Kismet Theatre Collective in Nanaimo.
Part of Western Edge’s 2017-18 all-Canadian season, “One Night Stand” is a comic thriller in which Daisy, stood-up by her friends on her birthday, has brought would-be country-western singer Rafe back to her high-rise apartment. When her boy-toy starts to reveal a darker side, however, Daisy is relieved to find that her best friend Sharon is just a phone call away. Turns out Daisy is a bit too trusting, and the twists-and-turns begin.
Directed by Kismet Theatre Academy founder Bonnie Catterson, whose staging of "Venus in Fur" was a hit for Western Edge in 2016, the production transports audiences back to the 1970s, an era of shag rugs and landlines and, in a play that is as harrowing as it is hilarious, phone cords that can be ripped from wall. It comes with an audience advisory for adult language and content. “I don’t think there’ll be a single audience member who isn’t entertained and affected by Daisy and Rafe,” says Catterson, “two lost souls who bash into each other for a night of wild adventure and unpredictable madness. This play is like a rollercoaster. Once you get on you cannot get off until it’s over. And I promise it will leave you breathless.”
“One Night Stand” features Nanaimo actors Wren Beckley, Blaine Nosworthy, and Tash Vincze.
Set and sound design is by Andrew Kent, with lighting design by Dean Chadwick.
The Stage Manager is Wren Beckley.
