Excitement is growing about Christ Church Cathedral’s celebration of the tenth anniversary of the magnificent Hellmuth Wolff organ with a recital by French organist Olivier Latry.
One of the most in-demand concert organists in the world today, he has been on the cathedral’s concert wish list ever since the installation of the instrument in 2005. Based in Paris, Latry is titular organist of the grand organ of Notre Dame Cathedral.
M. Latry is bringing a concert program that will explore the immense tonal possibilities of the largest organ ever built by the late beloved Hellmuth Wolff. His intriguingly adventurous program spans the entire history of organ music, including baroque favorites by Bach, Buxtehude and Couperin, as well as modern 20 and 21st century masters.
Latry is renowned for his formidable skill at improvisation. He’ll conclude the recital by taking a tune given to him on short notice – and virtually instantly performing an entire new piece based on it!
Olivier Latry is the perfect performer for this anniversary occasion – he was a close friend of Hellmuth Wolff, and is well acquainted with the Quebec-based master-builder’s superb instruments.
