A new type of community hub will be opening in Courtenay on September 12. It is the I Belong Centre, an 8,500 square foot facility, offering a wide range of educational and recreational activities for the whole community.
The $1.9 million facility, funded almost entirely by local donors, has been the dream of L’Arche Comox Valley as a place where those with different abilities can mix and mingle, enhance their skills, enjoy being active and creative and make new friends. The event is being welcomed by municipal and provincial leaders as a centre unique in British Columbia, inspired by the contributions that the developmentally disabled can make to the wider society.
It has studios for art and crafts, room for theatre, music and dance, a teaching kitchen, a lounge for hanging out and six apartments for adults with developmental disabilities who are able to live semi-independent lives.
