Heads up, jazz fans! We've got an amazing night planned for you that features two full bands, a fantastic singer and a stack of new and familiar charts to keep you grooving through the season.
Decadence is a 10-piece ensemble (7 horns!) that has featured a rotating cast of Nanaimo's top music professionals, students, and VIU alumni since the band's inception in the mid-1990s. What will you hear? A mix of swinging jazz, crazy jazz (Mingus anyone?), funk, wild re-arrangements of classic rock tunes, latin grooves, dynamite improv...all in all, a whole lotta fun and stellar musicianship to boot.
The Nanaimo Musicians Association Big Band is an 18 piece ensemble that saw its first rehearsal 50 years ago. Past members include Diana Krall, Phil Dwyer, Ingrid Jensen and Christine Jensen. Although its roots run deep in the big band tradition, the group is happy to take flight and work on new arrangements from contemporary jazz artists. You can count on hearing lots of toe-tapping grooves and impeccably chosen arrangements along with some superb improvising.
