Funny, frantic and full of frivolity, The Government Inspector by Nikolai Gogol and adapted by Morris Panych is a hilarious classic that has had audiences rolling in the aisles since 1836, solidifying its place as one of the worlds most popular theatrical comedies. Performed by the highly regarded Advanced Teen Company of Kate Rubin Theatre & Drama Studio; The Government Inspector plays May 3-6 with a preview night, regular evening performances and 3 matinees.

The story unravels in a small rural Russian town where the local officials love to embezzle, cheat, and steal until news of a surprise visit from a government inspector sends them into a panicked frenzy! A classic case of mistaken identity triggers a hilarious series of events, providing a satirical examination of governments and greed. To add to the hilarity, Kate Rubin who directs this delightful Russian classic has cast the boys as women and the girls in all the male roles.

Graft, bribery, corruption, fraud, government dishonesty does a nineteenth-century Russian comedy based on these topics have any relevance for modern Canadians? Kate Rubin thinks it does, and her theatre studios Advanced Performance Group is ready to prove it. The group, long known for its innovative and professional staging of theatrical classics, has chosen the masterpiece of Russian comic theatre, Nikolai Gogols The Government Inspector, for this years offering.

A new Canadian adaptation of the play by Vancouvers own Morris Panych allows its humor to transcend barriers of language, time and culture. Panych makes the depiction of government corruption in a small city in the Russian outback a hilarious study of how fraud, trickery and malfeasance have a way of backfiring, with most unpleasant (but comically fitting) consequences. Many Victorians may find added humor in the plays examination of how those in a small centre, far from the nations capital, can take advantage of the distance that is both a blessing and a curse.

This text was chosen by the young people who will perform it. Their decision to use gender-bending casting, with boys playing the main female parts, and girls handling all the male parts, adds to the hilarity. All of these Victoria-area secondary students have been involved in every aspect of the production, from staging and design to publicity and acting.

The Advanced Performance Company, a class for teens at Kate Rubins studio, puts on a full-length play each year. The group chooses challenging material, and the experience of preparing and performing these works is life-changing for the teens involved. In recent years they have produced The Three Musketeers, The Crucible, Pride and Prejudice, Spring Awakening, and Great Expectations.

Tickets for the evening shows May 3-5 and the final Sunday May 6th show will be $12 for adults and $9 for students. Preview Night, Wednesday May 2 will be $9 for adults, and $6 for students.

We have two student matinees on May 3 and 4, both at 12:30 p.m. Tickets for those school matinees are $8. Teachers and chaperones with school groups are free.
