Winter 2018 Artist Talk Series kicks off January 18

Join NIC’s School of Fine Arts and Design in welcoming Victoria-based artist Rick Leong to its Comox Valley campus Thursday, January 18.

Leong will launch the Winter 2018 Artist Talk Series, a five-part series bringing distinguished local and international artists to NIC.

“We wanted to give the local art community and emerging artists an opportunity to meet successful artists and hear directly from them about their practice,” said NIC instructor Sara Vipond, who is coordinating the series. “We’re very excited to welcome Rick to NIC this week.”

Leong uses the language of landscape to explore hybridity between disparate experiences of space and place.

Drawn from observation and influenced by historical Chinese art forms, his work investigates the interconnectedness of the land and the subjectivity of human experience.

He obtained his MFA from Concordia University (Montreal, 2007) and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts acquired his thesis work. In 2008, he was a finalist in the Royal Bank of Canada’s Painting Competition, touring to the National Gallery of Canada, the Power Plant (Toronto) and the Contemporary Art Gallery (Vancouver).

In addition to his many Canadian and international group exhibitions, Leong has exhibited solo at the Two Rivers Gallery (Prince George), Anna Leonowens Gallery (Halifax), the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the McClure Gallery (Montreal).

His talk takes place at NIC’s Stan Hagen Theatre from 6 to 7 pm. The series also includes Clive Powsey (February 8), Rande Cook (Feb 22), Nadine Bariteau (March 8) and Brendan Tang (March 22). All NIC’s Winter 2018 Artist Talk Series takes place in the Stan Hagen Theatre at NIC’s Comox Valley campus. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
