Doors 6:00PM Screening 6:30PM

Join NIC nursing students for a screening of two short films on March 21 at the Stan Hagen Theatre.

Proceeds will support NIC’s Global Learning Initiative, a student-led project aimed at raising awareness of global issues through partnerships with local communities and individuals.

The screenings include the documentary, Water Warriors and the two-minute short We Are Protectors of the Water. A discussion with local experts will follow the films.

Water Warriors is the story of a New Brunswick community’s successful fight to protect their water from the oil and natural gas industry. In 2013, a Texas-based company arrives in New Brunswick to explore for natural (fracked) gas. In response, a multicultural group of unlikely warriors – including members of the Mi’kmaq Elsipogtog First Nation, French-speaking Acadians and white English-speaking families – set up a series of road blockades preventing exploration. After months of resistance, their efforts not only halted drilling, they elected a new government and won an indefinite moratorium on fracking in the province.

We Are Protectors of the Water consists of beautifully-filmed local watersheds, lakes and rivers set to Yarrow Willard’s eponymous poem.

Doors open for the event at 6 pm and the screening starts at 6:30 pm.

Admission is by donation, with proceeds going towards NIC's Global Learning Initiative, which supports students’ experiences in remote communities in Uganda, Nepal and Mozambique and it continues to strengthen cultural understandings through field schools to Aboriginal and global communities.

Fair trade coffee and chocolate is also available for purchase at the event.
