NIC nursing students present Everybody�s Children

Join globally minded NIC nursing students Wednesday, Feb. 21 for a screening of the documentary Everybody’s Children.

The film, from director Monika Delmos, captures a year in the life of two teenage refugees, Joyce and Sallieu, who have left their own countries to make a new life in Ontario. Joyce, 17, left the Democratic Republic of Congo to avoid being forced into prostitution by her family. Sallieu, 16, had witnessed the murder of his mother as a young boy in war-torn Sierra Leone.

Delmos follows them as they bear the normal pressures of being a teenager while undergoing the refugee application process. She shows how the guidance and support of a handful of people make a real difference in the day-to-day lives of these children.

Admission is by donation is by donation to NIC's Global Learning Initiative, a student-driven project which fosters awareness of global issues through partnerships with local communities and individuals.

The initiative supports students’ experiences in remote communities in Uganda, Nepal and Mozambique and it continues to strengthen cultural understandings through field schools to Aboriginal and global communities.

Fair trade coffee and chocolate is also available for purchase at the event.

The screening take places at the Stan Hagen Theatre on NIC’s Comox Valley campus. Doors open at 6 pm, with the film set to begin at 6:30. A short discussion will follow the screening, at approximately 7:30 pm.
