Parents exploring their school choices in the Comox Valley will be excited to know that a new school is opening its doors this fall. The Saltwater School (a Waldorf inspired learning centre) will be holding their open house in April.
We are very excited to introduce ourselves to the community and to show families what the Saltwater School has to offer children, says Rebecca Watkin, grade one/two teacher. What makes the Waldorf curriculum so special is the union between academic subjects and art, movement and music. The school will offer practical skills like knitting, woodworking, gardening and sewing as part of the curriculum. This fall parents can register their children for kindergarten to grade 2. Our goal is to expand the school up to grade 8 by 2017, says Watkin.
Staff and board members will be on hand to answer questions and give tours of the new school. Volunteer sign-up sheets will also be available with jobs to suit all skills and abilities.
The schools inception began with a handful of hardworking parents who had a vision. They wanted to create a Waldorf style learning centre for their children. Today their painstaking labor of love is almost complete. Initially my motivation was close, I did this for my son but now my vision is much broader. I feel very lucky to be involved with the Saltwater School and all the great people who have made this school a reality, says Michael Vincent, board member. The school opens September 6th.
The open house will include a small opening ceremony and refreshments at noon. For more information about the Saltwater School and Waldorf style learning, check out the Saltwater school website at www.saltwaterschool.com.
