This series of paintings is based on the connection and interaction between people, groups of friends and individuals. The dynamic relationship with the land and atmosphere are woven into the mix.

Gillian Redwood was born in Wales, and moved to Canada as a professional artist in 2004. With a working studio in Victoria, she exhibits nationally and internationally. Fascinated by the science of optics and the behavior of light, the artist uses acrylics on her large canvases, with dynamic lines to express relationship.

Inspired by learning the energetic healing paths of Chinese Medicine, she has brought these unseen energies to light, using bright streams of colour and semi-transparent shapes. Her work has been described as ' lyrical, lively and colourful'. 'You have created another universe, one of beauty and mystery.' This exhibition follows the opening of 'Energetic Universe' in Victoria in February this year. The featured painting 'Mystic' is a classical image "Created with a memory of Botticelli’s ‘Primavera’, allegorical figures transform the human spirit into the light of a new morning. The pale green foliage surrounds and weaves its energy between the figures, a tropical forest in the early morning light. I recount an age-old ritual of rebirth, in the classic representation of perfect male and female, engaged in mute conversation." 'Inverno' shows two figures "We see the moving forms of two people caught up in a swirling, atmospheric whirlwind. They may be dancing with the blowing snow or battling against it... perhaps sheltering from the stormy rain. In any event, they move with the full intensity of life in a challenging world."

In 'The Four' the figures glow with an incandescent light, an aura surrounding their form. They shimmer against a dark background, interacting, mirroring each other, conversing. Their shared energy radiates out through the blurred outlines of their auras. Streaks of bright yellow & white enter from above - a universal energy that’s been drawn into the figures & then back down into the earth. Shimmering around each one is the unseen glow of the aura. This painting portrays a group of friends sharing a simple, but profound moment. 'The Runner' "They say a good love is one that sits you down, gives you a drink of water, and pats you on top of the head. But I say, a good love is one that casts you into the wind, sets you ablaze, makes you burn through the skies and ignite the night like a phoenix - the kind that cuts you loose like a wildfire and you can’t stop running simply because you keep on burning everything that you touch! I say that’s a good love - one that burns and flies, and you run with it !” (C. JoyBell C.)

You can view these paintings in the Main Floor Gallery at Saanich Municipal Hall on Vernon Avenue. Driving north on Douglas St, the road becomes one-way on Vernon Avenue. Turn right into the Saanich Municipal Buildings and follow signs to Visitor Parking. The Main entrance is next to the Car Park.
