New European Painting Practices

This course examines contemporary European painting practices as a source of inspiration for ideas and approaches to making work.
Course content includes contemporary Belgian, Dutch, British and German painters, with special attention paid to the New Leipzig School. Students will learn what is specific to painting within the diverse cultural and geographical area of Europe, and how the contemporary scene relates to European and North American art history. This is a hands-on course, supplemented with lectures and on-going individual feedback and group critiques.
The focus is on guiding students through the process of creating work that responds to the New European practices while also discovering their own personal voice. Some painting experience recommended.
