This is a virtual event--that's right, you can join us from the comfort of your own home, on Zoom!
This month's speaker is Colin Angus.
Colin Angus, a leading adventurer, ocean rower and founder of Open Ocean Robotics, a Victoria maritime drone company, will talk about how his career of ocean expeditions led to creating a company producing solar powered autonomous boats. Weaving in stories of rowing across oceans, he’ll detail how those skills led him to design one of the world’s most capable uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs), which is now proving effective at fighting illegal fishing, helping endangered marine mammal populations and providing important hydrographic survey information.
With much of our oceans still unexplored, unmapped and unobserved, collecting better data in a manner that is safe, affordable and effective is critically important. Colin knows just how treacherous being on the open ocean in a small boat can be and has designed autonomous boats that are up to the task, capable of being deployed on multi-month missions, powered by only the sun and enduring hurricanes, something Colin did in a rowboat (not recommended!).
