Nature Nanaimo is very pleased to announce our next monthly meeting to be held on May 17th, at 7 PM at the Beban Park Social Centre. Our guest speaker – Bill Merilees will be presenting “Nanaimo’s Cornucopia of Spring Flowers” – perfectly timed with the beautiful spring weather we have been experiencing.
Bill Merilees is a 3rd generation British Columbian and was born in Vancouver. Bill graduated from UBC in Zoology & Botany and in 1953 joined the Vancouver Nat His Society (Nature Vancouver). Bill settled in Nanaimo in 1978 working for BCParks 'managing' their nature interpretation programs and retired in 1997. He has travelled extensively and has written "Newcastle Island - a place of Discover", "Gardening for Wildlife" and co-authored with Ches Lyons "Trees, Shrubs and Flowers to Know in B.C. & Washington".
Bill was the recipient of BCNature's Outstanding Naturalist - Ian McTaggart Cowan Award. Post-retirement he has been the Secretary of the Newcastle Island Society and the Chair of Friends of Buttertubs. Bill is also an international tour leader/travel manager – having lead trips to Antarctica, Australia, Borneo, India, Madagascar and beyond.
