The Nanaimo Museum is hosting guest speakers from the Passages Canada program as part of the bilingual exhibition Canada: Day 1. The presentation takes place on Thursday, June 12 at 2pm. The three speakers will be sharing their stories of immigrating to Canada from countries including Senegal and El Salvador.
The speakers are from the Passages Canada program, a storytelling initiative of HistoricaCanada. Passages Canada volunteers share their personal accounts of cultural identity and heritage in public presentations to schools and community groups. Since 2002, over 1,000 speakers have created dialogue on Canada's rich diversity with over 250,000 youth and adults. "The Passages Canada speakers will be an excellent addition to our summer feature exhibit," says Aimee Greenaway, Interpretation Curator at the Nanaimo Museum. "Their stories will shed light on the experiences of immigrants and are sure to start conversations about our identity as Canadians."
The three speakers are Moussa Magassa from Senegal, Samuel Ramos from El Salvador, and Jia Tsu Thompson, originally from China. There will be a question and answer period following the presentations. "The speakers will be sharing experiences from their first few days in Canada, how they settled in a new community and why they decided to immigrate." says Greenaway. "Their diverse perspectives will be interesting to both people who have not experienced immigration and those who have."
The Canada: Day 1 exhibit features diverse personal Day 1 experiences, from Confederation to present day. The exhibition is on loan from the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 and is hosted in partnership by the Nanaimo Museum and Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society. Passages Canada is generously supported by Citizenship and Immigration Canada and TD Bank Group.
