Nanaimo Museum Toy Exhibit
The Nanaimo Museum is hosting a feature exhibit on toys during the holiday season. The toys are from the early 1900s to the 1980s. Classic toys and blockbuster toys from each era are highlighted. Toys opens on Saturday, November 16 and runs until Tuesday, December 31.
Most of the toys in the exhibit are on loan from people in the community. "We had an overwhelming response from community members who were interested in sharing their toys for the exhibit," says Aimee Greenaway, Program and Volunteer Coordinator at the Nanaimo Museum. "Toys will reflect the childhoods of many locals and their families.
The toy exhibit coincides with the museums busy Christmas season. Toys will be a great addition to our annual Christmas programs, says Greenaway, "Including our popular family Christmas event, Under the Christmas Tree." The event takes place on Saturday, December 14 from 1pm-4pm and features professional storyteller, Margaret Murphy sharing Christmas stories at 1:00pm and children's activities afterwards until 4pm.
Admission to the museum in the month of December is by cash donation to the food bank. "The holiday season provides a great opportunity for us to support local organizations that help Nanaimo families," says Debbie Trueman, General Manager. "Community members can visit the museum for a family Christmas experience in the toy exhibit and know they are helping people in our area."
The museum has added extra operating hours for the month of December. "We are open Sunday afternoons," says Trueman. "Opening for extra hours will allow more visitors to see the toy exhibit and give customers more time in the gift shop." All proceeds from the gift shop directly support museum programs and exhibits. The museum is open Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm in December and Sundays 12pm-4pm. The museum is closed on Dec. 25, 26, 29 and January 1.
