Guest curators Ivan Sayers and Claus Jahnke have selected for this exhibition, one of a kind garments and accessories from private collections and the Nanaimo Museum. These garments are truly stunning said curator David Hill-Turner. The simple lines, sensuous fabrics and use of beading capture the essence of the movement. Dresses include an original Chanel LBD and Schiaparelli coat with buttons designed by Salvador Dali. Their designs reflect simplicity and youthfulness through the use of abstract and geometric shapes.

Art Deco Fashions, the Nanaimo Museums feature exhibition opening May 9, 2013, offers fashionistas an opportunity to view exceptional garments and accessories that beautifully represent that era. From the Paris Exhibition, the distinctive style quickly gained worldwide popularity through advertising, magazines and movies. Improved access to comfortable and quick travel brought inspiration from faraway places including Russia, Egypt, and Mexico.

Paris was the place to be in the 1920s as bold and exciting fashion styles took the world by storm. Leading the way was the dynamic 1925 Paris Exhibition where designers were inspired by an exciting palette of international styles. The major archaeological event of the day, the discovery of the boy Pharaoh Tutankhamens tomb, sparked a craze for all things Egyptian including design. The exhibition includes examples of the most important works by the most important designers of the period said fashion historian and guest curator Ivan Sayers.

Art Deco Fashions opens May 9, 2013 and runs until August 6, 2013.
