The Nanaimo Historical Society presents:
Nanaimo at War: Local Remembrances of the Great War.
A century ago the Great War broke out while Nanaimo was still on the heels of the crippling Vancouver Island Coal Strike.
In reaction, our City's sons were mobilized into forces such as the Nanaimo Infantry Company and the No. 4 Tunneling Company Canadian Engineers, befor marching to the local wharf or railroad station and steaming across the Atlantic towards the trenches along the battle lines.
Local military historian, Lawrence Rieper, will present aspects of his research on Nanaimo during WW1 including training, enemy aliens, character profiles, landmarks and locations.
The Nanaimo Historical Society is a non-profit organization. Founded in 1953, the Society's mission is to preserve, promote, and celebrate the history of Nanaimo and central Vancouver Island. Annual membership is $24 for an individual, $30 for a family, and $34 for an organization.
Membership includes a subscription to British Columbia History, the quarterly journal of the British Columbia Historical Federation.
